About the Teacher
This is my fourth year at the middle school teaching 6th grade mathematics. I
believe that all children should be supported in a way that allows them
to feel successful and enjoy learning. My goal is to help each child
feel confident in his/her abilities and find successful methods for
learning. This is going to be a great year! Please feel free to contact
me with any questions or concerns by phone or email.
The sixth grade math course is the beginning of a formal approach to solving math problems. The emphasis is not the answer to a math problem, but rather the steps to reach the solution. Operational competency continues to be taught with a focus on decimal and fraction operations. Other topics include rational numbers, geometry, ratio and proportional relationships, algebra-readiness concepts, statistics and probability. Topics are closely aligned with the Common Core State Standards that can be found at EngageNY.org
. Sixth grade students will take the New York State Math Assessment given May of 2018. In addition, a cumulative midterm at the end of 20 weeks and a cumulative final exam at the end of the year.
- Does your child know their multiplication facts through 12's?
- Can he/she divide with two-digit divisors?
- Does he/she understand the difference between a fraction and a whole number? A decimal and a whole number?
- Can he/she perform basic operations using decimal numbers?
*Review of these skills should be part of your child's study routine at home until proficiency is achieved.
Your child can receive additional help from the following:
- Study halls
- Math lunch table
- Learning center: before, during or after school
