• Helping Children Read Unknown Words


    • Say the beginning sound of the word and then read the rest of the sentence

    • Look for sounds you know

    • Two vowel rule: When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking

    • Take off the suffixes: ed, ing, s

    • Divide between double consonants

    • Look at the picture clues

    • Read-on: Say “blank” and read to the end of the sentence

    • Look for a smaller word within the whole word

    • Back-track: Reread the sentence(s) that come before the word

    • Try the long vowel sound.  Try the short vowel sound.  Which sounds like a word you know?
