Say the beginning sound of the word and then read the rest of the sentence
Look for sounds you know
Two vowel rule: When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking
Take off the suffixes: ed, ing, s
Divide between double consonants
Look at the picture clues
Read-on: Say “blank” and read to the end of the sentence
Look for a smaller word within the whole word
Back-track: Reread the sentence(s) that come before the word
Try the long vowel sound. Try the short vowel sound. Which sounds like a word you know?
