In grade 5, instructional time focuses on three critical areas:
1. Developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions and developing an understanding of the
multiplication and division of fractions.
2. Extending division to two-digit divisors, integrating decimals into the place value system and developing
an understanding of operations with decimals to the hundredths as well as developing fluency with whole number
and decimal operations.
3. Developing an understanding of volume
Eight mathematical practices will be incorporated throughout the program. These eight practices include: make sense
of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique
the reasoning of others, model mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, look for and make
use of structure, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
At the fifth grade level, we will focus on the following concepts and the key vocabulary within these topics:
The Scientific Method
Rocks and Minerals
Light and Color
Introduction to Motion
addition, a week long course from Project KNOW will be offered for all
fifth grade students in the spring. Additional information will be sent
home closer to the date.
Students will be expected to take notes and incorporate study skills based on the curriculum.
