There are many fun and exciting things happening in our kindergarten classroom. Students are learning and growing each and everyday!
This website will serve as an extra form of communication between parents and teacher throughout the 2015-2016 school year.
Make sure your kindergartener is well rested, has a good breakfast and is dressed in comfortable clothes for a busy day of learning fun!
Mathematics
We believe our kindergarteners need to learn math using lots of manipulatives ! The areas we focus on are
- Counting
- Number Sense
- Patterns
- Geometry
- Joining and Separating Sets
Language Arts/ Literacy Curriculum
Our goal is to prepare our students for the adventure of lifelong reading and writing. Ways we immerse our students in reader's and writer's workshop are:Shared Reading- A way we learn to read books together.
Guided Reading - This is when we read in small groups to focus on reading strategies.
Read Alouds - An opportunity to foster students' love of many types of literature.
Writing Curriculum
We also use a Writer's Workshop format for our writing time. During Writer's Workshop children learn how to: form letters, write letter sounds, illustrate pictures to match words, tell stories through writing and illustrations. Our writing curriculum introduces children to narrative, informational, and opinion writing to coincide with the Common Core Standards. The children write everyday.Science Curriculum
In kindergarten we use formal science units provided by ESP. These kits are:
- Animals
- Planting
- Waterplay
- Sunshine & Shadows
During the school year we explore using the Scientific Method. We learn about making a hypothesis, observing, recording data, and making conclusions. This gives us an opportunity to be scientists and experience hands-on activities!
Social Studies Curriculum
Kindergarten students develop their awareness of themselves and their communities through our Social Studies curriculum. The areas we discuss are:
- Myself and Others
- Families
- Communities
- Citizenship
- Holidays, Traditions, and Various Cultures
Other aspects to our curriculum are Character Education and Conflict Resolution. These two units run throughout our entire school year. We allow the children to make good choices when solving problems through the use of our Peace Wheel. They are able to choose between:
- Take Turns
- Share
- Compromise
- Say "I'm Sorry"
This in turn, teaches them to take responsibility for their actions and to solve disputes in a positive way, using words.
