Third Grade Curriculum Highlights

Students will be actively engaged in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies lessons.  All students in third grade are expected to demonstrate responsibility for all work, including homework and classwork.

ReadingA variety of fiction and non-fiction genres will be consumed through Readers’ Workshop, book clubs, guided reading lessons, and independent reading opportunities.  We are implementing Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study for Reading.  Our writing focus will be “teaching the writer, not the writing” through Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study and the Writers’ Workshop model.  Writing lessons will address Narrative, Opinion, and Information genres through daily writing opportunities.  My overall goals are to help your child develop a positive attitude towards writing, build age appropriate skills, and to value writing as an effective means of personal communication.  Grammar and other writing mechanics lessons are incorporated into Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop.

Spelling:  This year we are using a spelling program from Zaner- Bloser.  Your child will have spelling homework each day – Monday through Thursday.  Most weeks, final spelling tests are given on Fridays.  On these weekly tests, students will be expected to demonstrate that they understand the patterns presented throughout the week.  Spelling tests will come home on Fridays and need to be returned with a parent signature each Monday.  Children may take pretests at various times this year.  These tests help group them according to their ability and allows us to test each child at his or her ability level.  All children will be challenged to improve their spelling abilities this year!
