Marvelous Monday, March 30
Good Morning, Everyone! Welcome Back! I hope you a had a nice weekend! I was so happy that I had the opportunity to touch base with you last week! This week, we will focus on reading and writing words with the short u sound, the weather and writing a How-To Book and an All About Book. We will also continue our study of two-dimensional, flat shapes.
Phonics First
Spring is a rainy season! Time to put up umbrellas! Let's practice the short u sound and make words in the -ug family.
Use your magnetic letters to make these words:
bug hug mug rug tug pug dug challenge words: snug plug
Write this sentence:
A bug and a pug tug on a rug.
Reading
As you read on Raz-Kids today, look for the -ug chunk in words.
Writing Workshop
The best time to see a rainbow is after a morning or evening rain. Everyone loves rainbows. Let's get ready to teach people how to draw a rainbow. Go to the Let's Find Out Website. Search: When A Rainbow Shines. Click the "Read Aloud" icon at the top of the issue. Have fun clicking crayons to color the rainbow on the activity page. Tomorrow, we will start our How-To Draw a Rainbow Book so think about how you will teach someone to draw a rainbow.
While you are on the Let's Find Out site, you may want to play Raindrop Pop to review word wall words. You may also want to print out the game Roll A Rainbow to play with someone in our family.
Math
Number Review
Use your 0-20 number line to practice counting both forward and backward.
Practice all of your addition facts in your Fast Fact Book.
Shapes
Today, we will look at another two-dimensional, flat shape--the rectangle. Can you find a rectangle or an object that has a rectangular face to trace onto a piece of paper. While you are tracing, notice that the rectangle has two long sides and two short sides. It also has 4 corners. Cut out your rectangle and save it for our study of shapes. Now, you will need to get 3 pieces of paper. Trace a rectangle onto two of the pieces of paper. What can you transform a rectangle into? I transformed my rectangle into a rocketship so I will write "A rectangle can be a rocketship." When you you finish transforming your rectangles, you can make a book. Staple your pages together and think of a title for your book. Remember, titles are short!
Shape puzzles are fun to do. Go to Starfall on the student resources page of the Sheridan Hill Website. Once at Starfall, go to Geometry and Measurement. You will find Shape Puzzles there. Have fun!
Science
Check the weather. Is it a lion or a lamb day? Don't forget to fill in a page of your weather journal. Will March go out like a lion or a lamb? We will find out tomorrow!
Wind Sock Project
To check for wind, you can make a simple wind sock. You will need a piece of construction paper. You can decorate it with pictures of weather related things. Then, roll the paper into a tube. Tape the tube together. Next, tape some strips of crepe paper or colorful newspaper around the inside edge of one end of the tube. Then, punch two holes through opposite sides of the other end of the tube and attach a piece of string for a handle. Take your wind sock outside. Is it a windy day? Which way is the wind blowing? A meteorologist uses a wind sock to measure the wind direction. Have fun with your wind sock.
Mystery Science is an amazing website with lots of science videos and activities. Enzo loves this website! I think you will too! You can sign up for free! Just go to mysteryscience.com to access this amazing site. Be sure to go to Weather Conditions or Spring to watch the weather video "Have You Ever Watched A Storm?"
Have a great day!
Tune in tomorrow for Terrific Tuesday!
Love,
Miss Arnold
XOXOXO
