    Classroom Information

    Second grade is an exciting learning year!  Students will be actively engaged in lessons and activities that promote reading, writing and math skills, as well as science, social studies, and health.  Making friends, being a responsible team player and HAVING FUN are important in second grade! 

    1. READING
    • develop fluency 
    • increase sight vocabulary 
    • use strategies to determine words 
    • apply comprehension strategies for both fiction and non-fiction texts

    2. WRITING

    • explain answers in math 
    • develop a paragraph using complete sentences 
    • use the writing process 
    • compose stories from our life, informational writing and lab reports, opinion writing and poetry

    3. WORD STUDY

    • study vowel patterns, blends, digraphs and suffixes 
    • apply studied patterns 

    4. NUMBER SENSE

    • skip count to 100 by 2s, 5s, and 10s 
    • skip count by 3s to 36 and 4s to 48 
    • determine number patterns 
    • develop understanding of ones, tens, and hundreds place

    5. ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

    • determine sums and differences using fact families and related facts 
    • demonstrate fluency of addition and subtraction facts up to 18 
    • add and subtract two-digit numbers with and without regrouping 
    • develop problem solving skills

    6. TIME AND MEASUREMENT

    • tell time to the hour, half hour, and five minutes 
    • identify coin combinations to make one dollar 
    • use a ruler to measure length 

    7. SOCIAL STUDIES

    • develop map skills 
    • review holidays celebrated in the United States 
    • compare and contrast communities in the United States

    8. SCIENCE

    • conduct hands-on Interactions experiments 
    • measure length and weight 
    • monitor the life cycle of butterflies  and  plants

    9. HEALTH

    • study the ear and eye 
    • learn about nutrition 
    • review ways to stay healthy
