CHS SWIM INFORMATION

Swim unit will be taking place in March/April as part of our physical education curriculum. This unit is an exciting opportunity for students to develop water safety skills, improve their swimming abilities, and have fun while engaging in physical activity. It is also one of the 9 areas that NYS ED Commissioner's Regulation 135.4 says should be part of physical education curriculum when availalble.

What Your Child Will Learn:

  1. Water Safety – Students will focus on water awareness, including safe entry and exit techniques, how to float and maintain body position, and basic rescue techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of swimming in safe environments and the role of lifeguards and safety equipment.
  2. Basic Swimming Skills – For beginners, we will cover floating, kicking, and basic arm movements to help children gain confidence in the water. For more advanced swimmers, we will refine techniques in strokes such as the freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and possibly the elementary backstroke.
  3. Endurance and Stamina – Students will work on building swimming endurance through various drills, improving their ability to swim longer distances and manage their energy while in the pool.
  4. Water Fun and Games – To make the unit engaging, we will incorporate water-based games and activities that promote teamwork, coordination, and a love for swimming.

Important Details:

  • Location: The swim unit will take place in the CHS POOL, where all safety protocols will be in place to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience. Our pool is not chlorinated, we use bromine.
  • What to Bring: Please ensure your child brings a swimsuit, towel, swim cap and any necessary swim gear (e.g., goggles) on the days we have swimming classes. A waterproof bag for wet items is also recommended.
  • Health and Safety: If your child has any medical conditions, health concerns, or specific needs related to swimming, please inform me as soon as possible so that we can make appropriate accommodations.
  • Medical Excuses All medical notes must be submitted to the teacher for review by 3/10/25 (Team Sports) and 3/20/25 (9th and Lifetime Sports). We only accept notes from a doctors office for medical reasons. Notes from Tattoo artist and ring piercing specialist are not acceptable. Students will be expected to make up the learning with written work as assigned by the teacher
  • Because physical education is NYS graduation requirement and part of the GPA at Clarence high School, learning assessments must be made up in the pool, should a student miss class for a day or two for illness or other reasons.
  • Our staff work very hard with every potential situation that arises to make it work. Please contact the teacher if you have any questions.

We are looking forward to this valuable and engaging part of our curriculum, and we are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all students.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s physical education teacher.

Thank you for your continued support in providing meaningful and well-rounded experiences for our students.

Sincerely,
 Clarence High School PE Department
