Policy for Medications at School
If your child needs to take medication in school, please be advised of the following:
This procedure applies to prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as Advil, Tylenol, allergy or cold medication, etc. This will be strictly enforced.
NYS prescriber forms are acceptable or you may download the schools form below.
The school nurse must have a written order from the student’s medical provider indicating the name, frequency and dosage of any medications to be administered, and written approval from the parent/guardian. Orders faxed from your physician are acceptable.
The medication should be delivered to the school by the parent or guardian in the original labeled container.
The medication can not be expired. Nurses are not allowed by New York State to administer expired medications.
The only medications that can be self-carried by the student are an inhaler, an EpiPen, and diabetic supplies. The doctor’s order must specify the student is capable of self-administration (attestation). The building nurse will also confer with the student regarding self-carry within our schools.
Medication is held until the last day of school. Parents are responsible for picking up medication. All medication not picked up will be disposed, medication cannot be held in the health office over summer.
Medication orders must be renewed every school year. Orders are only valid for 1 year.
