Clarence Family Support Center Named NYSSBA ‘Champions of Change’
For its work supporting students, families and the community, the Clarence Family Support Center was recognized with a “Champions of Change” award by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA).
“It’s humbling,” said Evan Vahratian, the center’s coordinator. “It’s a reminder of the unique situation our office has in both the ability to serve the community and to be the recipient of so much support from leaders in the District and community.”
Clarence Board of Education Trustee Tricia Andrews, representing NYSSBA’s Awards and Recognition Committee, said the honor recognizes organizations that “fundamentally change the way things are done for the better.”
“The Family Support Center is not merely a resource — it is a lifeline. It’s a space built on empathy, trust, and the deep-seated belief that every single family in the Clarence school district deserves to thrive,” Andrews told the Board at its October 27 meeting.
That work of the center, founded in 2018 and now housed in an office space connected to Clarence High School, includes providing wide-ranging services from mental health and counseling support and referrals to food and clothing assistance. The center has found ways to connect to the community through events like the Headlamp Hikes, a staff and student-led podcast as well as art therapy programs.
“By making these resources accessible right within the school system, they’ve reduced barriers and stigma, ensuring that help is not just available, but actively utilized,” Andrews said.
Credited during Andrews’ remarks were Vahratian, social worker Penny Connors and secretary Cheryl Weiss. Vahratian said receiving recognitions like the NYSSBA award creates additional motivation to continue their work for others.
“We are the beneficiaries of a school and community that knows how to be creative and adaptive in the ways they address the community’s needs,” Vahratian said.
