Students in Clarence High School’s Orchestras had the opportunity to see incredible musical talent and take in the sights as they visited Chicago.

The highlight for the approximately 40 students during the trip from April 24-27, 2025 was the chance to hear a performance from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as see a student performance of the musical “Man of La Mancha” at Northwestern University.

“It’s good for them to experience these kinds of performances firsthand,” said Douglas Shaw, orchestra director.

The trip to the Windy City also included visits to the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium and the Cloud Gate mirrored sculpture, also known as “The Bean.” The wide-ranging activities gave the chance for students to bond with their fellow orchestra members, Shaw said.

“The participants on these trips have unforgettable experiences, and the time with their fellow students is important too,” Shaw said. “It builds a sense of identity within the group.”

For nearly two decades, the Clarence Central School District has received the Best Communities for Music Education award from the NAMM Foundation, which reflects schools that demonstrate exceptionally high levels of commitment and access to music education.
