Clarence High School Students Support Historical Society Project
Students in woodworking classes at Clarence High School took time to support a project bringing new energy to the Clarence Historical Society.
The students in Production Systems in Wood 1 were tasked with building a set of eight large bookshelves, which allowed more history and genealogy materials to be prominently displayed at the society’s location at 10465 Main Street. As students assembled the book shelves, they were able to see how the shelves featured rabbet and dado joints, which are things the students were working on in the class.
“It gives them a prideful connection to the community,” said Bradley Wright, technology teacher. “They were able to see a real world application of the woodworking techniques they develop in class.”
The students’ work on March 19 was coordinated by Clarence High School history teacher Joseph McGreevy, who as Town Historian serves as a liaison between the society and area schools.
“This gives them a sense of ownership, and the ability to say, ‘This is something I helped make,’” McGreevy said. “Hopefully this brings them back.”
Both Wright and McGreevy praised the students for the positive attitude they had for their work.
“They rose to the occasion big time,” Wright said.
