The Clarence Central School District’s Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics celebrated the impact physical education can have for students as he was recognized as Director of the Year in New York.

“We're trying to teach kids how to be healthy for life, and to teach them skills and knowledge that they can take with them outside of school,” said Jason Lehmbeck, who received the award from the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AHPERD). “This is a very valuable part of their day.”

The award was presented to Lehmbeck, who has been with the District since 2019, in November during the association’s annual conference in Verona. Lehmbeck described receiving the award as “humbling.”

Among the highlights of the District’s work in physical education include professional development for staff and expansions in opportunities for students to engage in classes, including new and expanded unified classes which bring together students with and without intellectual disabilities. The District has a long tradition of supporting physical education opportunities for younger students, including the annual Jack Hesslink All-Elementary Track Meet, which will be held for the 70th year this spring. Lehmbeck said this success of the curriculum reflects the “amazing people” that make up the department’s staff.

“It shows the willingness of our staff to look at things differently and to make a great program into an even better program,” Lehmbeck said.

Research from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services indicates that physical activity can provide a wide range of wellness and academic benefits for students, including improved attention and memory and reduced risk of depression.

“Movement during the school day is something that helps activate their brains for learning,” Lehmbeck said.

The APHERD award also reflects Lehmbeck’s service as a past president of the organization, and his support of fellow directors in western New York and across the state.

“We’re incredibly proud of Jason,” said Dr. Matt Frahm, Superintendent of Schools. “He’s the best of the best, and his leadership has elevated every aspect of our programming here in Clarence. Jason has opened up opportunities for kids at every level, and we’re fortunate he’s a Red Devil.”
