VIDEO: Stock Ticker at Clarence High School to Promote Financial Literacy
Students at Clarence High School were encouraged to develop their financial literacy as a new stock ticker was revealed in the school.
The newly installed digital ticker display will stream live updates from global financial markets, becoming an engaging learning tool for students, staff and visitors to the school building. It can also be used to display customized messages for key events at the school.
The stock ticker, developed by the Clarence High School Academy of Business and Finance Advisory Board and financially supported by the Clarence Rotary Club, was unveiled in a June 6, 2025 ceremony with students, staff and administrators.
Anne Gaume, a Clarence Rotary Club member and incoming president for the Advisory Board, said building financial awareness and making the stock market less elusive were key factors in bringing the stock ticker to the school.
“When it comes to the stock market, it can seem elusive,” Gaume said. “This can help get people motivated to learn more and not be scared of money.”
Riley McFarlane, a junior at Clarence High School and member of the academy’s Student Leader Team, said the stock ticker could help students become more familiar with financial terms and principles through seeing them on the board. Riley said she has learned more about investing through participating in a mock investment club with fellow students in the academy.
“It’s exciting to have more people experience that since they’re going to have to use that in their future,” she said. “It gets kids more involved in financial planning.”
The Clarence High School Academy of Business and Finance allows students in grades 10-12 to explore the world of business. Students receive a theme-based curriculum along with a work-based learning curriculum. The program is designed to connect students with the world of financial services, business-related careers, and prepare them for two and four year college degree programs.
Heather Hartmann, who leads the academy, said the new stock ticker will fit well into the academy’s curriculum and prepare students for future financial decisions.
“They get to see the importance of saving and investing and the difference it will make in their lives,” she said.
