UB Students to Spark Student Curiosity at Clarence Science Night
Elementary students in the Clarence Central School District will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on science-based activities and crafts during the upcoming Clarence Science Night event.
Clarence Science Night: A UB Student Collaboration is scheduled for Friday, November 14 from 5-7 p.m. at Clarence High School, and admission is free. Though the event is intended for students in grades 3-5, siblings and families are welcome to participate.
“We’ve spent so much time coming up with activities that are fun and hands-on, but also inspire kids to explore and ask questions,” said Lilly Tartaglia, a senior who studies neuroscience at the University at Buffalo. “We hope that something they do at Science Night sparks a moment of curiosity, because that’s where a lifelong love of science begins.”
The event will bring together students and clubs from the university representing scientific fields such as dentistry, biology, astronomy, chemistry and neuroscience.
“It’s really about taking complex concepts and helping kids understand them in a fun, engaging way,” Tartaglia said. “We want them to see that science is everywhere, if they're curious enough to look for it. It's not just something they can read about in a textbook. It’s something they can explore, build, and experience for themselves.”
This is the second year for the event after being launched by Noah Vaccarella, a 2021 graduate of Clarence High School. Tartaglia, who attended last year’s event, said having college students present the lessons created excitement for the young participants.
“It really shows what UB stands for, taking what we learn to make a difference beyond the classroom and using it to inspire the next generation,” she said.
