Update from Clarence CSD January 24, 2025
Updated

Dear Clarence School Family,

Because public schools in New York State are required to be in session for a certain number of days each year, I’ve had several people reach out asking if we would have to make up the classroom time that was lost this past week. The reality is that living in Western New York, we anticipate having to close school a time or two because of inclement weather during the winter months. With this in mind, we typically build four extra days into our school calendar so that we can appropriately balance safety with meeting regulations. Additionally, however, there are State processes in place for making exceptions when emergency declarations are made or when extraordinary conditions occur. These allowances are only meant to be used if schools run out of emergency days, but because they exist, we do not believe we will have to modify any vacation periods scheduled for later in the year.

With that being said, we have a lot of winter yet to go. Please keep your fingers crossed for a streak of minimal snow and mild temperatures. If we do end up having to make any calendar revisions because of future school cancellations, we will communicate the changes immediately.

Schools Prepare to Observe Lunar New Year

In 2023, New York State passed a law requiring all schools to observe Lunar New Year. Because it is still a relatively new practice for most districts, I wanted to provide a quick reminder that students will be off from school this coming Wednesday (January 29). I also wanted to share a link to information from the Smithsonian for anyone who might be interested in learning a bit more about this important celebration.

Finally, don’t forget that the Clarence Youth Bureau will be holding its annual Winterfest from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25 at the Clarence Town Park. Hope to see you there!

A brief Friday message for a quick week, Red Devils. Have a great weekend and enjoy the AFC Championship Game on Sunday. GO BILLS!
