Summer Reading
The Anxious Generation

Welcome to AP Research! As part of your preparation for the academic year, you are required to read Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation (ISBN: 978-0593655030). Here is a link to the book:

https://www.amazon.com/Anxious-Generation-Rewiring-Childhood-Epidemic/dp/0593655036

**A digital copy of this assignment will be posted on the high school website under “Student Resources.”

There will be a summer reading test based on this book. This will be given during the first week of school (but not the first day). You’ll also need to have your copy of the book with you in class every day until I indicate otherwise.

The following assignment is due the first day of class. If you use AI, you’ll start the year with a zero.

           Type a personal/reflective/analytical essay (minimum: four double-spaced pages, 12-point
font, Times New Roman, 1” margins) as a response to The Anxious Generation in which
you respond to the author’s arguments by discussing your own experiences, observations, and
any reading or research you’ve done on this topic. These might include experiences and
observations related to people you know (siblings, parents, friends, relatives) and yourself.
Feel free to write more than the four-page minimum since this is a topic about which you
might have many experiences and opinions.

You should use evidence/quotes/ideas from the text as “jumping-off points” for your essay.
You should quote frequently (with page citations) and offer commentary on what Haidt is
saying. One of the goals of this essay is to demonstrate that you read the entire book, so your
references should come from various parts of the book, including the final part
           (“Collective Action for Healthier Childhood”).

Share your essay with me as a Google Doc. Make me an editor on the assignment so I can
confirm the authenticity of your work.

Annotations are encouraged but not required.

You WILL be allowed to use your book and notes/annotations during the in-class summer reading test.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email (achambers@clarenceschools.org) or message me through Schoology.

Thanks!
