Update from Clarence CSD August 20, 2021

Dear Clarence School Family,

As the week comes to a close, I wanted to pass along a handful of updates and reminders related to the start of school. However, I also wanted to say thank you to the parents and guardians who stopped by the Clarence Senior Center and the High School Library this past Thursday. The “meet and greet” conversations were warm and welcoming, and I can’t tell you how much I have appreciated the kindness everyone has extended during my first few weeks in the District.

Guidance for Opening

Like all of you, we are eagerly awaiting opening guidance from our partners in public health. We continue to hear that the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) will be providing specific information in the coming days, and once that happens, we will work quickly to adjust and communicate our safety protocols.

Additionally, you may have read that this past week, Kathy Hochul indicated a statewide mask mandate would be coming for K-12 schools. When pressed on the issue, a spokesperson for the Lt. Governor stated, “as soon as [Hochul] becomes Governor, she will be working with the Department of Health to require masks in school as a way to boost the safety of students, teachers and support staff.” If this indeed takes place, it will remove the ability of districts to implement local masking policies at this particular point in time.

Student Orientations

Beginning next week, many of our students will be participating in orientations as a way of meeting their teachers and familiarizing themselves with our buildings. To ensure the events are safe and productive, we will be requiring all students, staff, and parents at the orientations to wear masks. The decision is based on the recommendations from the State Education Department (SED), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and it is in alignment with what we expect from the Governor’s Office.

Fall Athletics

On Monday, our JV and Varsity athletes will be kicking off another season of Red Devil athletics. Our Athletic Department has done an outstanding job getting ready for fall sports, and we are currently working with other Erie County Interscholastic Conference (ECIC) schools on spectator policies that will be more sensible and less restrictive than they were last year. Although we are still a couple weeks away from games, meets, and matches, we would encourage you to visit our ArbiterLIVE page (click here) for up to date scheduling information.

However, to keep our kids safe and to minimize the potential for large-scale quarantining, we will be requiring all student-athletes to mask (as tolerated) when they are indoors. When they are outside, they will be allowed to wear face coverings, but they will not be required to mask.

As always, thank you for your support, encouragement, and positivity. We are on track for welcoming all students back to in-person learning in September, and it’s going to be a great year.

Matt Frahm, Ed.D.
