Transportation Department Update
Dear Clarence School Community,
At approximately 4:30 p.m. today, we learned that one of our school buses had gone off County Road near Strickler Road. Fortunately, there were no students or attendants on the bus, and the driver was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. We are thankful that no one was injured, and we would like to express our appreciation for the Fire Department, the New York State Police, and the local EMT for responding immediately.
We would also like to acknowledge the fact that emails like this are incredibly unsettling to read. It is important to emphasize, however, that school buses are one of the safest modes of transportation out there. Part of this has to do with the design of the vehicles. For example, unlike cars and trucks, school buses are heavier, they have protective seating, and they come equipped with safety features such as flashing red lights, cross-view mirrors, and stop-sign arms.
It is also important to note that we have some of the best school bus drivers around. In addition to completing a series of rigorous written and performance tests for their initial certifications, drivers must have clean driving records, and successfully pass regular physicals, trainings, and random drug tests.
Finally, we would ask for your help in supporting school bus safety. This week is “National School Bus Safety Week,” and the occasion is a good reminder to always use caution around buses, to never pass illegally, and to be mindful of blinking lights.
Thank you for your ongoing trust and partnership.
