Update from Clarence CSD October 21, 2022
Dear Clarence School Family,
For close to 30 years, we have brought together a group of approximately 40 stakeholders each winter to engage in a strategic planning process. The event has become an important annual tradition, as well as an opportunity for students, staff, parents, and community members to develop key priorities for the school community.
Over the past couple weeks, this group—along with our Board of Education—has spent time finalizing a formal Strategic Plan. The process has been a collaborative effort, and the result is a written document that outlines priority areas, action steps, and indicators for success. We will use the text as a blueprint for establishing goals, measuring growth, as well as for aligning resources, and we would like to thank everyone who participated in the development of the Strategic Plan.
(Note: For a fun walk down memory lane, check out this Clarence Strategic Plan that was developed in the 1990s and rediscovered in the District Office this past summer!)
School Board Recognition Week
In New York State, public schools elect Boards of Education to ensure districts have the policies, personnel, and financial resources required to drive learning off the charts. Here in Clarence, our Board of Education members volunteer their time each week to hold meetings, attend school events, and participate in regional activities. They play a leadership role in improving outcomes for kids, and this School Board Recognition Week (October 17-21), I would ask that you join me in thanking our selfless Red Devil governance team.
Marvin Henchbarger GSA Advisor Award
Please join me in congratulating Chelsey Bieler and Sean Ryan on receiving the “Marvin Henchbarger GSA Advisor Award” from GLYS Western New York, Inc. Mrs. Bieler and Mr. Ryan advise the Clarence Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), and they are on the front lines when it comes to ensuring that every student feels safe, seen, and respected in our High School community. Under their leadership, the GSA has expanded to become the largest in Western New York, and we could not be more proud of their well-deserved recognition.
Music Calendar
On Tuesday evening, I had the opportunity to attend our first concert of the year—a performance by our High School Orchestras in the Middle School Auditorium. For just over an hour, families had the opportunity to hear soloists as well as large group ensembles perform a range of beautiful pieces. The evening was a reminder that the arts are every bit as important as subjects like math or social studies, and that we are blessed with a world-class Music Department here in Clarence. If you haven’t done so already, please make sure to check out our Music Calendar so you know when to catch our musicians in action during the 2022-2023 school year.
Finally, I wanted to give Julia Laspro (singles) as well as Ava Casell and Sofia Banifatemi (doubles) a quick shout out on their Section VI tennis titles this past weekend! They are incredibly hard working athletes, and their success is a reminder to cheer on all of our Red Devil athletes as they move into postseason competition.
After a week of rainy weather, the next couple days look great. Hoping you can enjoy the sunshine this weekend, Red Devils.

Superintendent of Schools
PS: A big thank you to Josh Allen for hurdling over the Middle School courtyard during the Bills bye week. In case you missed it, one of our faculty members managed to snap this photo of #17!
